General Manager - Water and Environment Headhunters

Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) is a global project delivery, engineering and sciences firm, offering services in Power & Energy, Water & Environment, Buildings & Infrastructure and Mining & Metals.

The Challenge:

The senior management at SKM tasked us with finding a General Manager for their Water & Environment function, one of four operational business units within the organisation, as the incumbent at the time was due to move on to a new opportunity away from the business.

Reporting to the COO, the General Manager would be in control of a department that employed approximately 1400 permanent and contract staff with a revenue in excess of $200M AUD (approx. £110M GBP).

A multitude of strategic, operational, client-side, financial and people focussed responsibilities would be entailed.

Our Candidate:

SKM made it clear they needed an individual whom had already enjoyed success in a similar role with proven experience in building client relationships, demonstrable market foresight,leadership qualities and an entrepreneurial brain.

It was obviously also imperative that the successful candidate was from an engineering or project background with a focus on consulting and a track record of influencing a high number of stakeholders.

SKM were a company with a set of key moral values and beliefs, therefore, it was important for them that any incoming individual showed a passion towards implementing a growth and capability strategy for the Water & Environment business unit.

Our Solution:

Following a comprehensive search, we sourced the perfect candidate for the role and SKM as an organisation.

As a successful MD for a company that provided consulting services to the water industry with a strong background in engineering, plus, experience leading a division with a very high turnover and over 500 staff, this individual fit the bill across the board.

Experience and qualifications aside, SKM were particularly impressed with their desire to work in a more autonomous management role and passion to drive growth in a forward thinking company.

Identifying the Candidate:

As with all of our headhunts, we took on a whole-of-market approach, and managed to find the perfect candidate who was actually working in a different role at the time but had more than the necessary skills and experience to succeed in this General Manager position.
