The Business:

Fluid Structures is an award winning engineering practice that was set up to work closely with architects and designers. The practice was formed in 1999 and has provided engineering input on projects ranging from £50K domestic extensions to £100 million commercial schemes.

The award winning practice is split up into small groups of five or six people, comprising of Engineers and often others with design related backgrounds.

The practice is used to working with outstanding architects and designers on projects all over the UK across a range of sectors including high-end hotels, luxury residential, interior store design and more.

The Challenge:

Fluid Structures was growing as a business and they had a clear aim to have two more Associate Directors by the end of 2018. Someone in this role would have a clear route to equity Directorship and, as Associate Director, would be eligible to become an Equity Director within two to three years.

At the time, the practice wanted us to provide the first of two new Associate Directors; a high calibre individual who could manage a group of Senior Engineers, Engineers and CAD Technicians to produce required project information.

They also asked us to find someone with a strong engineering background and a real passion to work as part of the senior management team which was taking the practice from strength to strength.

Our Candidate:

The ideal candidate would have a polished client facing nature with a strong structural engineering background and would either be a chartered engineer already, or be on the cusp of achieving chartership.

Strong experience in delivering accurate structural engineering solutions appropriate to the stage and type of project under consideration was a must - whilst inspiring and motivating others to do the same.

Most importantly, they’d be proven at leading small, specialised teams comprising of senior engineers and architects and achieving above expectations.

Our Solution:

We found a chartered engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the design and analysis of a wide range of structures who’d worked all over the world in a variety of sectors and roles from Project Engineer to Associate Director.

They’d managed big budget projects from start to finish with teams of up to 10 engineers and architects with notable success in the middle-east.

The team at Fluid Structures were also very impressed with our candidate’s own expanding professional network and their client-centric approach to business development.

Knowing the Client:

Fluid Structures were committed to advancing the professional status of all employees and actually paid annual membership fees. They had a very social vibe in the office and would regularly get together in and out of work with the company paying for excursions and weekends away.We not only had to find a candidate with the experience required, but also with the outgoing personal traits needed to fit in at Fluid and self-drive to repay the company’s investment in its staff.

Identifying the Candidate:

For this particular headhunt, we focused our attentions to the top performing and most senior engineers in and around London. We especially looked at companies that had a structural engineering consultancy arm to their business.By using our existing networks and extensive research resources, we were able to find the best candidate for our client.
